A Festive Touch to Your Fireplace: How to Hang Stockings the Right Way

When the winter months roll around and Christmas is finally upon us, there’s no better place to hang the stockings where they can look vibrant and cozy than over a warm eco-friendly fireplace, however the good news is, you won’t be required to drill a few holes in the mantel to keep them up.

How To Hang Stockings On A Fireplace

There are several ways you can get around this issue so that the mantel and the fireplace itself remain in perfect condition when it’s time to take the stockings down. Here are 7 easy and simple ways you can hang your stockings on a fireplace.

Ways Of Hanging Stockings On A Fireplace

Method 1: Heavy Decorations Or Mantels

An easy and temporary way to hang up stockings that makes full use of Christmas decorations is by securing the stocking string underneath a heavy ornament resting on the mantel.

This could be anything that contains a decent amount of weight such as mini Christmas trees, pictures or even a long stretch of garlands.

Any ornament or decoration can be used for this as long as they are weighty enough to sustain the stockings overnight, however, because it is only temporary and won’t require you to drill any holes, it’s a very simple but effective method.

Method 2: Adhesive Hooks

Another easy way to hang stockings without causing any permanent damage to the mantel or fireplace is adhesive hooks.

Not only can these hooks be attached effortlessly, but they are also often extremely small so they won’t stand out too much to the point where they could be an eyesore.

To attach these hooks, make sure you rub the surface down in rubbing alcohol and keep in mind that these types of hooks don’t work as well with brick, however, they will stick just fine to any other surfaces.

Next, attach the strip to the wall or remove the strip from the back of the hook, depending on where it is located.

Once you’re ready to stick, remove the red liner if you have a separate strip on the wall and press the hook against the wall for 30 seconds to ensure it is safely attached. Wait approximately 1 hour before using the hooks, and they will be ready to go.

Method 3: Stocking Holders

With a range of different festive designs to choose from, stocking holders are not only very cheap and can be found in virtually any retail store, but they are also specifically designed to support stockings on surfaces that they would normally struggle to rest on, making them an excellent option for hanging stockings safely over a fireplace.

When using a stocking holder, all you need to do is arrange the holders so that they can hang the stockings just over the edge, and that really is all there is to it.

Stocking holders also come in a huge variety of sizes, meaning if you had a few to hang up at once or if you just wanted to space them out a bit more evenly so that everyone can open their presents without being crammed together, the choice is entirely up to you.

Method 4: Use Twine Or Yarn

If you really want to try getting creative and festive, try attaching a piece of colorful twine or yarn to your mantel to use to clip on stockings.

While this is an easy way to hang stockings, and a method that takes just a few seconds, it should be noted that because of how light the string can be, you should not try hanging up any heavier stockings using this.

Instead, empty or extremely light stockings will be a much better choice to hang up when using twine or yarn.

Method 5: Attach A Curtain Rod

If you can manage to attach a curtain rod to your mantel, they make for an incredibly easy way to hang up stockings since the hooks used to hold up curtains can just as easily be used to hang stockings.

Additionally, because curtain rods are most commonly made out of durable wood or steel, they provide enough weight and durability to hold as many stockings as you would like regardless of how heavy each one is.

To install a curtain rod, all you need to do is find one that can be accurately adjusted to the length of the mantle and then attach the curtain rod holders to the front and underside of the mantel so that it’s securely attached.

Method 6: Mantel Clips

Because they are most commonly used for Christmas, mantel clips can often be found in very vibrant and festive colours and designs with them being the perfect way to hang up a few stockings in an easy and efficient manner.

Mantel clips are also incredibly useful because similar to adhesive hooks, they are designed to not leave behind any marks, scratches or holes in the mantle itself, and if you have dual-hook mantel clips you can even add some extra decoration to the fireplace such as tinsel or a few extra baubles.

Because they are designed to be attached to the mantle, all you need to do is adjust the clips so that they are securely fastened, and they will be able to hold any type of stocking you hang on them.

Method 7: Use A Few Books

Whether it’s your own books or a mixture of some of the kid’s favourites too, because books work so well as paperweights and since they are often extremely bulky and heavy, they are an easy festive way to hang some stockings over a fireplace since you can simply slip the string of the stocking under a book lying either on its side or upright, with no fear of the stocking and its contents falling off the fireplace at any point.

Summary

These are a few simple and easy ways to hang up stockings on a fireplace that won’t put any of your presents in danger of falling and that are guaranteed to support any sized stocking regardless of its weight.
